1: 1 Mission Statement 2: 3: Intelligent agents are a modelling paradigm, based on the notion of agents with mental states. 4: The Jadex reasoning engine follows the Belief Desire Intention (BDI) model 5: and facilitates [easy intelligent agent construction>Features] with sound software engineering foundations. 6: It allows for programming intelligent software agents in [XML and Java>Features] 7: and can be deployed on different kinds of middleware such as [JADE>http://jade.tilab.com/]. 8: 9: To enable the creation of intelligent agents several different constituent parts have to be assembled. 10: It is necessary to provide an agent architecture that at least takes into account 11: agent-internal, agent society and artificial intelligence (AI) concepts. It is a property 12: of agent research that interesting research 13: results in various isolated areas exist, but that these results are not integrated into 14: superordinated architectures. Therefore until now no standards can address the construction 15: of intelligent agents in all facets. 16: 17: <!-- The Jadex project accomodates these properties with an *open research map*, that outlines 18: the research areas of interest and the actual work in progress in these fields. In the spirit 19: of an [open-source>Resources.Get+Involved] project everyone is invited to contribute his/her ideas and practical 20: improvements. --> 21: 22: 1.1 Summary 23: 24: The Jadex research project is conducted by the [Distributed Systems and 25: Information Systems Group>http://vsis-www.informatik.uni-hamburg.de/] at the [University of Hamburg>http://www.uni-hamburg.de/]. 26: The developed software framework is available under GNUs LGPL license, and is continuously evolving. 27: The project’s file releases are kindly hosted by the [SourceForge.net>http://sourceforge.net/projects/jadex/] 28: portal. The projects web presence is based on a wiki and thus allows Jadex users to contribute in various ways. The reasoning engine has been put into practice in the context of several 29: [research, teaching, and industrial application scenarios>Usages.Projects] 30: some of which are described here in the web. 31: 32: 1.1 Related Projects 33: 34: The Jadex BDI agent systems relies on [Jadex Rules>http://jadex.informatik.uni-hamburg.de/rules/], which is a lightweight small forward chaining rule engine. 35: 36: 37: 38: 39: 40: 41: 42:
